The Amazon is the mightiest river on earth.
Approximately 4,000 miles long, it is shorter than the
Nile, but carries sixty times its volume.  In fact, the
Amazon carries more water than the next eight largest
rivers combined!  The Amazon dumps about eight
trillion gallons of water into the Atlantic Ocean each
day-- enough to meet the daily water needs of each
household in North America 200 times over.  The
river has over a thousand tributaries and roughly
14,000 miles of navigable channels.  Dwelling within
its waters are approximately 4,000 species of fish--
more than live in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans
combined.
About the Amazon River:
About the Amazon Rainforest:
The Amazon rainforest is often referred to as the
"lungs of the earth."  It encompasses 3,000,000
square miles of dense vegetation that replenishes
the oxygen in the atmosphere.   This gigantic forest
actually moderates the climate of the entire planet.
There are about 100,000
known species of plants
and animals there, with many more yet to be
discovered.  Much of this forest is unexplored.  It is
the most thinly populated region on earth, and many
of its inhabitants continue to live in their traditional
ways.

"Thanks for excellent presentation that you gave at our school.  My third grade students were very excited about
your visit and were not disappointed.  You have peaked their interest in the South Pole region and travel.  You
did a great job keeping their interest and moved along at a pace that required them to be attentive.  Your slides
made your experience come alive for the students and me."  N.C., third grade teacher, Montevideo, MN.
